시벨리우스의 교향시 쿨레르보 교향곡은 그의 초기작에 속하는 대편성 관현악 곡으로 그 특유의 정묘한 관현악법이 드러나기 이전(작품 9번  - 교향시 전설)의 장대한 곡이다. 젊은 시벨리우스는 강열한 민족주의를 바탕으로 엘리아스 뢴토르의 대 서사시 칼레발라를 바탕으로 작곡되었다. 개인적으로 다른 시벨리우스의 관현악곡보다 즐기는 편이 아니지만, 지금의 이 곡은 자주 듣는다. 서구의 행진곡이 주는 느낌과는 사뭇 다른 정서의 행진곡은 보다 열정적이고 더욱 치열하다. 자신의 그리고 아버지의 원수를 갚기 위해 떠나는 쿨레르보, 비장감이 가득한 멋진 행진곡.
