17세기 프랑스 시인 샤를 페로의 동화 《신데렐라》를 대본으로 한 여러 발레가 공연되었으나 성공하지 못하였다. 1939년부터《신데렐라》의 안무를 생각하고 있던 애슈턴은 프로코피예프의 곡을 입수하자 1948년 페로의 동화를 번안하여 발레를 완성하였다.
이복언니들한테 구박을 받던 신데렐라가 요정의 도움으로 왕자와 결혼하게 된다는 잘 알려진 이야기를 충실히 다루었다. 눈부시게 아름다운 신데렐라가 화려한 마차를 타고 궁에 도착하자 그녀를 본 왕자가 사랑에 빠진다. 뒤에 떨어진 신발 한 짝의 주인이 밝혀져 그녀가 왕자와 결혼한다.
고전적 스타일로 이야기에 충실하게 안무하면서도 테마를 고양시키기 위한 춤과 디베르티스망을 효과적으로 추가하였다. 처음에 마고트 폰테인(Margot Fonteyn)에게 신데렐라 역을 맡기려고 하였으나 그녀의 부상으로 대신 모이라 시어러(Moira Shearer)가 주연을 맡았다.
