프로코피에프 (발레) 석화 Op. 118

The Stone Flower 석화
라브로프스키 안무로 1945년 볼쇼이 극장에서 초연.3막 8장.음악 프로코피에프
초연은 실패했으나 1957년 그리고로비치 안무로 주목을 받기 시작.우랄 지방의 동화를 원작으로
한 작품으로, 돌의 신비와 매력을 완벽하게 살리려는 석공 '다닐라'의 운명을 소재로 한 작품
 

<석화>는 대중적으로 인기 높은 발레극이라고는 할 수 없을 것이다.
물론, 러시아에서는 꽤 유명한 작품이긴 해도,
서구에서 그리 인기를 얻지 못했기 때문인지
그다지 많이 상영되는 것 같지는 않다.
그 이유로는 내용에 함유된 정치적 색채 때문인가 본데,
그뿐 아니라 예술과 현실에 대한 은유도 내포되어 있는 듯 하다.
 
 
또한, 본래는 우랄 지방의 민화에 그 바탕을 두고 있으며,
프로코피에프의 음악에 의해 완성되어진 발레극이다.
그러나 이야기의 짜임새가 유기적으로 엮어지지 못한 듯 싶어,
중간중간 다소 산만하다는 인상도 받게 된다.
게다가, 다닐라 역의 니콜라이 도로코프의 움직임은
때때로 무겁고 둔한 느낌을 주기까지 한다.
그렇지만, 카테리나 역의 루드밀라 세멘야카와
코퍼 산 여왕 역의 니나 세미조로바는
그 자신 역할의 이미지를 상당히 잘 구현해내고 있다.
 
 
한편, 주인공 다닐라의 석화에 대한 열정어린 추구는,
마치 예술가의 예술에 대한 집념을 연상시키기도 한다.
이 때문인지 관능미를 풍기는 코퍼 산의 여왕은 예술과 이상을,
다닐라의 약혼녀 카테리나는 삶에 대한 사랑과 그 현실의 상징처럼 보인다.
다닐라는 코퍼 산에서 그토록 바라던 석화를 발견하게 된다.
그러나 그의 마지막 선택은 그 곳에서의 안주가 아니라 현실로의 복귀다.
이는 그 자신의 선택인 동시에 카테리나의 인도에 의해서이기도 하다.
 
 
다닐라가 자신의 이상 세계이기도 했던 코퍼 산에서 환희에 잠겨있는 동안,
카테리나는 현실 세계에서 압제자이기도 했던 난폭한 세베르얀에 대항해냈다.
물론, 세베르얀에게 그 탐욕에 대한 적절한 댓가를 내린 이는
코퍼 산의 여왕이었지만, 현실적으로 대항해낸 이는 카테리나였다.
그러했기에 다닐라는 이제 자유가 흐르는 현실로 복귀를 하는 것이다.
또한, 예술에 대한 이상과 사랑의 결합은은 환상에서가 아니라,
현실에서 이루어나가는 것임을 의미하는 결말이기도 하리라.
이처럼 예술과 삶에 대한 관념적인 주제를 내포하고 있는 내용에도 불구하고,
이를 표현해내는 춤과 이야기 간의 유기적인 짜임새가 다소 약하게 느껴져
인상적으로 남는 작품이 되지는 못할 것 같다.
